Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, former Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), visited Jiangxi University of Science and Technology (JXUST) today. She delivered a keynote lecture titled "Upholding and Improving the Practice of 'One Country, Two Systems' in Hong Kong" at the university’s "Octagon Forum," engaging in discussions with faculty and students.
Accompanied by Zhu Hong, former Vice Governor of Jiangxi and President of the Jiangxi Culture and Tourism Research Promotion Association, as well as JXUST leaders including Party Secretary Yang Bin and President Ge Shirong (a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), Mrs. Lam elaborated on the historical significance and practical achievements of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle. She underscored Hong Kong’s inseparable ties with the nation, highlighting its progress in rule of law, economy, and public welfare over the 28 years since its return to China. Drawing from her 42-year public service career, she emphasized the central government’s critical role in ensuring the policy’s long-term success and urged young students to contribute to national modernization.
The lecture, blending academic depth with patriotic education, reinforced attendees’ confidence in the policy. Students praised Mrs. Lam’s leadership during challenges such as safeguarding national security and combating the COVID-19 pandemic, citing her resilience and selfless dedication as an inspiration.
During a lively Q&A session, students raised questions about studying in Hong Kong and the strengths of its universities. Mrs. Lam also received a gift from JXUST students—an AI-generated artwork titled "Eight Scenes of Ganzhou," showcasing the fusion of local culture and technological innovation.
Prior to the lecture, Mrs. Lam toured the university library and attended a meeting with JXUST leadership. Secretary Yang Bin expressed hopes for strengthened collaboration between Jiangxi and Hong Kong in higher education and industry, aligning with the Greater Bay Area development strategy. President Ge Shirong presented her with a commemorative gift.
The visit concluded with a performance by the university’s Octagon Choir, which sang classical Chinese poems including "Quiet Night Thoughts" and "Short Song Line." Mrs. Lam praised the students’ talent and extended an invitation for them to perform in Hong Kong. The choir later gifted her a CD album of their ancient poetry adaptations, "Igniting Youth: Chinese Classical Poetry Choral Series Vol. 1."
