Jiangxi University of Science and Technology (JXUST) has received the green light from China’s Ministry of Education to establish its first Sino-foreign joint institute, the JXUST-JCU Institute of Intelligent Manufacturing, in partnership with Australia’s James Cook University (JCU). The institute is also the first of its kind in Jiangxi province to span bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, marking a major leap in the university’s global engagement.
The institute will build a seamless bachelor’s-master’s-doctorate talent pipeline by pooling the academic strengths of both universities. Based on JXUST’s Nanchang campus, it plans to offer four undergraduate programs—intelligent manufacturing engineering, materials science and engineering, artificial intelligence and environmental engineering—along with master’s programs in AI, mechanical engineering, environmental science and engineering, and materials science and engineering, as well as a doctoral program in materials and chemical engineering.
James Cook University, founded in 1970, is a leading Australian public research university. It operates main campuses in Townsville and Cairns, with additional international campuses in Brisbane and Singapore, and is home to over 20,000 students from 111 countries and some 4,100 staff. In the 2026 QS World University Rankings, JCU placed among the top 2 percent of universities globally. According to the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment, 83 percent of its research fields are rated at world standard or above, with particular strengths in environmental science and management, intelligent manufacturing, organic chemistry, geology and applied ecology—disciplines that will lend solid support to the new institute.
The launch of the institute is a concrete move by JXUST to serve China’s intelligent manufacturing strategy and advance the opening-up of higher education. It also aligns with Jiangxi’s “1269” action plan for modernizing key manufacturing supply chains. By concentrating on intelligent manufacturing, AI, environmental engineering and high-end materials, the institute aims to forge a full innovation chain—from resource security and materials creation to equipment realization, intelligent empowerment and environmental sustainability. Through deep cooperation with JCU, JXUST intends to infuse its traditional strengths, including mechanical engineering, materials science and environmental engineering, with “smart-plus” capabilities, equipping Jiangxi’s manufacturing sector with the talent and technology needed to climb the global value chain.
The approval represents a milestone in JXUST’s international education, advancing from individual joint programs to a full-fledged institutional partnership. The university said it will now focus on putting physical infrastructure in place and ensuring high-quality operations, with the goal of making fresh contributions to Jiangxi’s high-level opening-up and international cooperation in education.
