On the morning of March 20, the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Science and Technology convened a provincial conference in Nanchang to advance the development of scientific and technological achievements transfer service systems. Attendees included representatives from provincial departments, the Provincial Sci-Tech Achievements Transfer Center, municipal governments, Ganjiang New District, as well as universities, research institutes, industrial parks, and service organizations. Xiong Zhihua, Standing Committee Member of the University Party Committee and Vice President of Jiangxi University of Science and Technology (JXUST), attended the conference and delivered a keynote speech on behalf of the university, sharing its experiences and achievements in promoting sci-tech achievements transformation.
Vice President Xiong highlighted three key strategies underpinning JXUST’s success in technology transfer:
Leveraging Disciplinary Strengths: By focusing on its distinctive expertise in nonferrous metals, the university has built influential patent portfolios in rare earth, tungsten, copper, and lithium sectors. In recent years, JXUST ranked first nationally in invention patent applications for rare earth, second for tungsten, and third for copper, while leading Jiangxi Province in patent filings for steel metallurgy and lithium battery technologies.
Innovating the "Seven-Pronged" Model: The university established a dedicated office for technology transfer, formulated institutional frameworks, trained a team of technology brokers, and developed platforms for achievements incubation, industry-academia collaboration), and service support. This systematic approach, termed the "Seven-Pronged Jiangli Model," has streamlined the transformation process.
Enabling Services and Incentives: JXUST actively organizes matchmaking events, roadshows, and training programs such as the "Jiangli Tech-Transfer Salon." It has pioneered initiatives like patent open licensing and "pay-after-use" agreements, partnered with institutions like the Shanghai Technology Exchange, and provided enterprises with patent navigation, intensive product registration, and intellectual property training to bolster industry-academia synergy.
Xiong noted that over the past five years, the university has signed 184 technology transfer contracts (involving 417 patents) through licensing, equity stakes, and other models, totaling 310 million Yuan. JXUST topped the 2023 rankings for sci-tech transformation among provincial universities and research institutes in Jiangxi. Its practices have been featured in media outlets such as China Nonferrous Metals News and Contemporary Jiangxi. During an inspection on February 1, 2024, Yin Hong, Secretary of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee, commended the university’s achievements.
Looking ahead, Xiong affirmed that JXUST will continue aligning with the national strategy of invigorating the country through science and education, addressing industry demands, and implementing Jiangxi’s "1+M+N" collaborative sci-tech achievements transfer service system to elevate innovation and technology commercialization to new heights.
