Zhu Rong, an esteemed alumnus who graduated from our university's Steelmaking program in 1983, has been elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), according to the newly released list of academician inductees for the year. This prestigious recognition marks a significant milestone for both Professor Zhu and his alma mater, bringing the total number of our alumni elected as Academicians to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and CAE to four.
Professor Zhu Rong, born in December 1962, currently serves as a Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), where he leads the National Key Laboratory of Green and Low-Carbon Steel Metallurgy. A Fellow of the Chinese Society for Metals and holder of numerous honors, he is widely recognized as a pioneering force in China's green and low-carbon steel metallurgy sector.
His decades of dedicated research and engineering applications have profoundly advanced the nation's progress in eco-friendly steelmaking technologies, particularly in efficient electric furnace steelmaking and the innovative application of CO2 in the process. Professor Zhu's distinguished career is highlighted by a series of top national awards, including four State Scientific and Technological Progress Awards (three as first completer), the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technological Progress Award, and a National Award for Innovation and Dedication, among many other accolades.
Prior to this achievement, our alumni Lai Yuanming was elected as an Academician of the CAS in 2011, while Wang Yunmin and Yang Chunhe were both elected as CAE Academicians in 2019.
